Our old Covina home

Here are some more pictures of our family home at 3255 Rancho El Encino Drive, in Covina, California – the house I grew up in.

This first one was taken by the gas company photographer on the same day in 1960 as the kitchen photoshoot. Look at the thick ozone smog! Those hills are only 1/4-1/3 mile away, but you can barely see them through the photochemical haze. Isn't that appalling? People in L.A. today complain about the smog. Most don't have any conception of how bad it was before the air quality laws...

Walking in the side door from the carport into the kitchen.

Looking toward the dining room from the kitchen.

The kitchen from the top of the west stairs.

The living room with its cathedral ceiling. All of the furniture is from our old Glendora house. All I still have is the maple lamp table at right, and the little foot stool at center left. On the television is the horse and carriage musical porcelain that I recently gave to my mother's cousin.

Looking back toward the fireplace, and the kitchen beyond.

A grand space, wasn't it?

And here is the "mature" property, in 1973. This shows the place as I most like to remember it. After I left home for college, my parents decided to sell the house, and this was the photo for the real estate listing. The asking price was $65,000. I'd imagine it's a million-dollar house today...

oh man, classy! I love how open the space is! My mom used to tell me about how bad the smog was in LA (she was in newport beach)... she said on top of it her dad smoked in the car, so he gave her a gas mask to cope because she complained so much. ;)

I thought you might like to see what information is available on the ZILLOW site. If you click on "Larger Bird's Eye View" under the picture, it will allow you to click on North-East-South-and West views of the house. Evidently it WAS worth over a million 2 years ago, before the housing slump hit.

Thank you. It was a pretty nice house. I've seen the property via Google Maps and Earth, too, and noted the changes. Overall the neighborhood seems to've gone upscale. I doubt my parents could have afforded to live there now!
